Cats spend much of their time in contemplation and like to sit where they can view the world while deep in thought. What they are thinking is a complete mystery - is it thoughts of food which keeps them so entranced or wondering where their newest hiding spot will be? Perhaps they are thinking of how to torment the dog next door or what demands they are going to place on their human owner when they return home.

5 Facts About Cormorants

Did you know....
  1. Cormorants and shags are the same thing? That's right! There are about 40 species of Cormorants and Shags over the world and they belong to the bird family, Phalacrocoracidae. Whether they are called cormorants or shags generally tends to depend where you are in the world.
  2. Cormorants and shags are coastal birds.
  3. They are fish eaters and will dive into the water to catch their prey.
  4. Cormorants and shags are known for standing out in the sun, with their wings spread out, after they have been diving for their food. While there are a number of theories as to why they do this, no one really knows for sure.
  5. In some countries, such as China and Japan, fisherman have trained cormorants to do their fishing for them. These is not very common anymore, but in Gifu Prefecture in Japan, this method of fishing has been used for over 1,000 years!

B is for Bulldog

The Bulldog is a breed of dog, which is often also referred to as the English Bulldog or the British Bulldog. Other breeds of bulldogs exist, including the American Bulldog and the French Bulldog.

Bulldogs are heavy set and their temperament does not usually reflect their unimpressed expression. Generally they are very docile dogs.

Did you know that beetles constitute approximately 25% of all known life forms on Earth? No, I didn't either! Given the huge amount of beetles in this world, it would be impossible to describe all of them... it has been estimated that there may be as many as 1 million species of beetles alone. So I won't even try - it would take me more than a lifetime. Here is a way to keep people from touching and moving your house keys, you will never lose them again!

Barn Owl and Barred Owl

The Barn Owl is the most common owl and one of the most widespread birds. It is often referred to as the Common Barn Owl. It is a nocturnal bird and usually becomes active just before dusk.



The barred owl is often called the Hoot Owl as well as rain owl, wood owl and striped owl and can often be found in Canada, US and Mexico.

All Sorts of Bears

If you think of bears, what comes to mind? Panda bears, polar bears. brown bears or teddy bears? Perhaps you even thought of a koala bear?

Panda's are one of the most popular bears around the world, although only found in the wild in China. Over recent decades, panda bears have become popular attractions on zoos all over the world. These zoos are paying a major role in trying to increase the panda population.

The polar bear is one of the world's largest bears and lives within the Artic circle. There is a popular story that polar bears cover their noses with their paws when hunting so their black noses cannot be seen in the white of the snow. This was related by early Artic explorers and through native oral histories, however there is no recent evidence that this actually occurs.
