Fox Art - Red Fox

The red fox is the largest of all the foxes and is found throughout the northern hemisphere and some parts of the southern hemisphere, including Australia. The red fox is very capable of adapting to new environments which is evidenced by the geographical spread over which it can be found.

Red foxes feature in the mythology and folklore of a number of cultures, often with characteristics of being deceitful and full of tricks. Alternatively they can be loyal and faithful.

From the artist, romanceworks ~ Spirit of The Red Fox is from the 'Spirit Of The Wild' Dream Catcher series of original art by Carol Cavalaris. Red Fox, creature of quiet cunning, spirit of observation and silence. You teach us that looking and listening are sometimes more powerful than speaking. And when it is time to act, you are clever, quick, and agile, showing us how to use our instincts and knowing to get what we desire, while still living in balance and harmony with our surroundings and our inner power. This painting of two red foxes within a dream catcher, one hidden with the red-orange wildflowers and golden brush, listening and looking, and the other gazing intensely at us, makes a stunning and inspiring art poster or print for any decor

D is for Deer

Did you know that prior to the 15th century the term deer (or der) was used to describe all wild animals? That's right. In Middle English, der was used for wild animals and cattle was used to describe domesticated livestock. It was not until after this time that the terms began to be used specifically to refer to what we now call deer.

There are indigenous populations of deer on all continents, except for Antartica and Australia. Australia and New Zealand now have species of deer which were introduced by settlers in the 19th century.
The continent which has the most species of deer in the world is the Eurasian continent, with the largest number found in Asia.

Cute Chipmunks

Chipmunks are small squirrels with stripes on its face and back and they can be found in North America and Asia.

Like those cute little chipmunks featured in kid's cartoons, real chipmunks love to eat nuts, but they also love to eat fruit, berries, grains, small frogs and worms.

Many species of chipmunks like to stockpile food for the winter as many of the nuts and grains they eat disappear. Chipmunks have pouches in their cheeks which allows them to carry food to their burrows, which they can either eat or store away for winter.

A is for Antelope

Did you know there are 91 species of antelope? No, neither did I... but I did realise that most species of antelope are native to Africa.
The term antelope is used to describe all other members of the Bovidae family which do not fall in the category of cattle, sheep or goat.

Exotic game hunting has led to many species of antelope being imported all over the world, particularly the United States. There are wild populations of a number of different species of antelope in Texas, although not native to that area.

A is for Alpaca

Alpacas are a species of camelids, along with llamas and camels. They have been domesticated for thousands of years for the fibre they produce and are smaller than llamas.

A is for Armadillo

I have a fascination of all unusual things and the Armadillo certainly fits into this category. Armadillo is a spanish word which means little armoured one and was known by the Aztecs as the turtle rabbit.

Armadillos have a leathery armour shell and are distant relations of the anteater and sloths (now that's an interesting extended family!)

Alaskan Huskies and Alsations

An alaskan husky is generally a spitz-type dog, but it is not a particular breed but rather a type of dog, classified primarily by its purpose, which is a sled dog. Alaskan huskies are the preferred type for dog sled racing championships.

The Alsation, or German Shepherd, originated in Germany towards the end of the nineteenth century. It is a working dog which was originally used for herding and guarding sheep. They are one of the most commonly registered breeds around the world, mainly due to its loyalty and protectiveness.

Aardvark Fun - Did you know?

How much do you know about aardvarks? I knew it is the first animal to be listed in the dictionary, but that isn't an awful lot, is it? So here are a few facts and bits of trivia I have learnt about aardvarks.

Aardvark means earth pig
The name originates from Africaans - aarde means earth and varken means pig - and it was given this name because of its burrowing habits. But, they are not a pig, or related to pigs!

Aardvarks love termites!
The aardvark is often called an anteater because of its love of termites and they have all the right tools for the job:
  • They use their claws to dig into the termite mounds
  • They trap the termites with their long tongue which is covered in sticky saliva
  • They can also use their nose by pressing it against the opening of the mound and suck the termites up
  • Their long nose and keen sense of smell means they can easily hunt for termites at night which are moving around outside the mounds.

Aardvarks live underground
The aardvark is from Africa, south of the Sahara Desert and spends its day underground in its burrow. It is a nocturnal mammal, so it comes out night to feed on its favourite food - ants and termites!
