Chameleons

Chameleons are a really interesting type of lizard and there are over 160 species of chameleons which can be found in a number of countries including Spain, Portugal and throughout Africa and South Asia.

Chameleons have very distinctive eyes and they are able to rotate the eyes independently of each other and focus on two separate objects. This effectively gives them a full 360 degree view around the bodies.

Chameleons also have very long tongues which can be extended very quickly (faster than the human eye is able to follow). This means that they are able to catch their prey very quickly before the prey has any idea of what is about to happen.

Camels... did you know?

Camels are easily recognised by the humps on their backs, which contain fatty acids. It was believed that the purpose of the humps was to store water, but this is not the case.

The Arabian camel, also known as the dromedary, has only one hump - as can be seen in the image above. The bactrian camel has two humps and is native to central and east Asia.

Camels were first domesticated over 4000 years ago by the people in ancient Somalia, and since that time have been domesticated for meat, milk and to be used as working animals.

Did you know that there are over a million feral camels in Australia? Camels were first introduced to Australia in the 19th century to provide transport through inland Australia which is largely a desert region.

Crows and Mythology

Crows feature strongly in ancient mythology throughout the world and are often considered to be portents of death. Throughout history they were commonly thought to circle above scenes of death, such as battlefields. Crows are often considered symbolic of the spiritual aspect of death and the transition to the afterlife.

In Japanese mythology, Yatagarasu (Jungle Crow) represents divine intervention in human affairs. The Japanese Football Association uses the symbol of Yatagarasu in its current emblem.

The Face of a Land Owner

Cats are very territorial and they love to lord over the area that they own. They will often find a high point so they can see everything that goes on and quickly oust those that place a paw on their land. Cats love to find hiding places so they can do surprise attacks on their enemies when required.

Cute Chipmunks

Chipmunks are small squirrels with stripes on its face and back and they can be found in North America and Asia.

Like those cute little chipmunks featured in kid's cartoons, real chipmunks love to eat nuts, but they also love to eat fruit, berries, grains, small frogs and worms.

Many species of chipmunks like to stockpile food for the winter as many of the nuts and grains they eat disappear. Chipmunks have pouches in their cheeks which allows them to carry food to their burrows, which they can either eat or store away for winter.
